Domestic Violence Awareness Month in Goose Creek
Mayor Heitzler makes proclamation for October 2012.

Release, City of Goose Creek:
Mayor Michael Heitzler signed a proclamation declaring October 2012 "Domestic Violence Awareness Month."
Domestic violence is a pattern of control in an intimate relationship where one person uses coercion and violence to gain power and control over his or her partner; it includes not only physical abuse, but also mental abuse, emotional abuse, financial abuse, isolation and sexual violence.

South Carolina ranks second in the nation for the number of women murdered by men. In 2011, 39 females and 13 males were murdered in domestic violence-related homicides.
The mayor urges all citizens to participate in the activities planned by battered women's programs and community organizations during this month.

Citizens should also take this opportunity to educate themselves about the impact of domestic violence in South Carolina and to become familiar with resources and programs available.
"This month, let us remember the victims of domestic violence, celebrate the survivors, and work together to eliminate violence against women and children from our community," said Mayor Heitzler.
