A man died early Sunday morning when his car was hit by an Amtrak train, according to Berkeley County Coroner Bill Salisbury. The name has not been released because the family has not be located.
Salisbury said the train hit the 1997 Pontiac Sunfire at the Mabeline Road crossing in Hanahan at 1:40 a.m.
"Witness's stated the sedan was sitting on the tracks when the cross arms came down," Salisbury said in a statement. "Witnesses tried to get the man out of the car but could not. He appeared to be intoxicated. The sedan was cut in half with the front part remaining at the crossing, and the rear half stuck on the front of the locomotive."
