Fire Protection, Land Buffers Top Council Workshop

City Council meets to talk issues Tuesday.

Fire stations, a proposed buffer ordinance and more are on the agenda for a special City Council workshop Tuesday. The meeting will begin at 6 p.m. in , 519 N. Goose Creek Blvd.

The city has several items on the fire protection to-do list. First, the city is at the edge of the aluminium power plant's site. The property will be used to build a new headquarters station.

Once completed, the city plans to modernize the Brandywine fire station, and build two more stations at Liberty Hall and Carnes Crossroads. The biggest question will be the costly expense of staffing these fire stations.

The proposed buffer ordinance would — creating tougher standards for property lines between grocery stores and homes, for example. The new standards would also require upgrades to landscaping in front of commercial lots.

Discussions on the new standards have kept the planning commission busy, as it has tried to hash out differences with the city's Economic Development Advisory Committee. The EDAC's chief concern has been how the buffer ordinance will be applied to existing businesses.

The council will also talk about the sanitation tax, according to an agenda.
