Firefighters Injured by Suspected Drunk Driver

Two firefighters injured while clearing car crash.

Two Goose Creek firefighters were injured overnight when they were hit by a car while they were attempting to clean up a crash scene near Walmart on St. James Avenue, according to the S.C. Highway Patrol.

Jessica Lanier, 25, of Goose Creek, has been charged with driving under the influence.

According to the Highway Patrol, Lanier was heading west on St. James Avenue at 12:22 a.m. on Wednesday, as she approached a crash scene in her 2011 Mazda.

She allegedly hit the two firefighters as the men were working the scene. Christopher Harrison, 31, and Capt. Michael Althoff, 45, were transported to Trident Medical Center. They were treated and released.

The collision is under investigation by the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

Update: An incident report by the City of Goose Creek Police Department provides a few more details regarding the early-morning incident.

It appears that Harrison and Althoff had been providing medical assistance to those injured in the initial accident. They were walking across the lanes of traffic in reflective gear to reach a Goose Creek Police cruiser when they were struck by Lanier's car and thrown against the cruiser.
