Five Goose Creek Teachers Asking For Help Online

Local teachers preparing for new school year with your help on Donors Choose.

Kickstarter has allowed artists and entrepreneurs to leverage online social giving for their projects, but its Donors Choose that has classroom donations one click away.

As an online platform for the Goose Creek community, it's only fitting that Patch shines a light on these worthy causes in the days before school begins. Here are five among more than two dozen fundraising pitches from area teachers.

GROOVING TO LEARNING: Ms. Stedman's class at Goose Creek Primary needs CDs and accessories like a number line floor mat. "Developmentally these students tend to learn best by movement. Brain research has shown that students will remember things better when it is associated with a movement or has some sort of rhythm with it like a song." Goal: $236.

BOOKS FOR BEGINNING READERS: Mrs. Wilson's class at Hanahan Elementary is looking for more resources with three sets of books for beginning readers. "With these books, they will have a greater variety of reading experiences that will help them grow to be strong, motivated readers." Goal: $172.

MILITARY KIDS NEED BIOGRAPHIES: Ms. Gibbs' class at Marrington Elementary needs two sets of read-along biographies. "The students complete a biography project each year. The project consists of writing the biography of a family member. This is one of their favorite projects. Unfortunately our supply of biographies is very limited." Goal: $550.

HURRAY HURRAH FOR CURRENT EVENTS: Mrs. Barbaro's class at Sangaree Elementary School wants subscriptions to Scholastic News for her 2nd graders. "I want the kids to see and know that reading is exciting. It helps that we can read and see the interactive website that is included!" Goal: $194.

NEW STANDARDS, NEW BOOK NEEDS: Mrs. Sweatman's class at Sedgefield Middle School needs a new batch of books that will help students excel under the district's new Common Core standards. "With these books my students will be able to read, discuss and compare not only literature, but historical events." Goal: $302
