Updated: Four Charged With Attempted Murder

Four young people were arrested Tuesday morning and charged with attempted murder in an incident off St. James Avenue, according to the Berkely County Sheriff's Office.

Officers say they found the victim, 21-year-old Dustin Patrick Mahaffey, lying in the grass in front of Devon Forest Elementary School near 8 p.m. on Monday with a gunshot wound in his leg and a busted lip.

Michael Brandon Whetsell, 19, of Bonneau, is charged with attempted murder, possession of a weapon during a violent crime, criminal conspiracy and unlawful possession of a sawed off shotgun.

Andrew David Sartin, 20, of Bonneau, is charged with attempted murder, armed robbery, possession of a weapon during a violent crime and unlawful possession of a handgun.

Barbara Leanne Dolloff of Bonneau and Kelsey Rhae Mixon-Riles of Bonneau, both 17, are each charged with conspiracy, armed robbery and attempted murder.

Mahaffey told police that Mixon-Riles picked him up at his home. He said she drove him to the Dorothy Street area of St. James Avenue, where she stopped the car. Dolloff then reportedly opened the trunk and Whetsell climbed out.

The victim claimed Santin shot him with a pistol and Whetsell allegedly came from behind the car with a shotgun, hitting him in the mouth with the butt of the gun. As he fled the scene, Mahaffey told police he heard additional gunshots.

The victim was transported to the Medical University of South Carolina.
