Update: Family Displaced After Kitchen Fire

Goose Creek family one of three assisted by Red Cross on Monday.

Update: Goose Creek Assistant Fire Chief Norman Cutshall tells Patch that the home on Francis Street is salvageable. The fire was contained to the cooking area of the kitchen, damaging the cabinets and fixtures. But the rest of the house is largely undamaged, he said.

The family was likely relocated temporarily because of the smoke. "As far as livability goes, it needs some cleaning before anyone can occupy the house again," Cutshall said.

ABC News 4 came out and talked with the family about losing all their possesions in the fire. There was also a harrowing moment when mother Katie Wright couldn't find her youngest daughter.

"It's the hardest moment of a mother's life," she said. "It's not something you ever want to experience. It seems like I was never going to find her and I was only like a foot away from her."

Wright could hear her crying through what she described as a wall of black smoke. The family eventually did escape.
