Goose Creek's Medway Plantation Sold for $11 Million

Historic South Carolina site sold to Greek owner of investment firm.

After decades in the same family, Goose Creek's Medway Plantation has changed hands. The pending sale was first noted in a Reuters story last month on plantations on the market.

Surrounded by 6,700 acres of timberland, Medway's pink stuccoed brick house was first built by a Dutchman in 1686, gutted by fire and rebuilt in 1704. Conservation easements prevent it from being developed.

After its price dropped over time from $25 million to $15 million, the sale of Medway to a foreign buyer is expected to close this month, property manager Bob Hortman said.

Medway Plantation has indeed changed hands, according to a Post and Courier report Wednesday, but the buyer is the Greek owner of a New York investment group.

The historic Medway Plantation has sold for $11 million, making it one of the priciest local real estate transactions in recent years.

The Berkeley County property had been on the market for about eight years.

The property had been owned by Bokara Legendre, a second-generation owner. Gertrude and Sidney Legendre had purchased it in the 1920s and made major renovations.

Medway had been marketed for hunters and Gregory Callimanopulos reportedly was drawn in with that in mind, according to the P&C.

Callimanopulos plans to reintroduce wild quail at Medway and use the Berkeley County estate as a personal getaway and hunting retreat, said Richard Baldwin, president of Tradeland Investors Inc., a New York-based firm identified on the deed as the buyer.
