Goose Creek Shakes Up Fire Station Plans

After Alcoa talks fail, city looking in new direction for headquarters, substation.

Goose Creek City Council will meet on July 24 to hear a very different plan for fire department expansion than was presented just a month ago.

The change was necessitated when the city couldn't negotiate a purchase with Alcoa for five acres along St. James Avenue. The site eyed near the water tower would have provided room for a new headquarters station and expansion.

The city had been planning for the new headquarters near the Goose Creek Walmart, along with rebuilding the current headquarters on Brandywine Drive and new stations at Liberty Hall and Carnes Crossroads.

City Administrator Dennis Harmon told Patch that they had to redirect thinking, taking a fresh look at another city parcel that would work just as well for the new headquarters.

"We'll be making one recommendation on a headquarters station," Harmon said of the July 24 meeting. "And then we're going to be presenting some options on a substation."

The substation would service the Walmart area and be comparable in size to the Crowfield substation near The Hamlets.
