Haley Visiting Alcoa Plant Thursday

Governor supports plant in utility rate dispute.

Gov. Nikki Haley has scheduled a tour at Alcoa's Goose Creek plant Thursday afternoon. Haley has pledged her support for the company in a utility rate dispute with power provider Santee Cooper.

The aluminium production plant rang the alarm in August that . In September, , telling local press that the company provides $110 million in state and local revenue.

The contract with Santee Cooper runs through December 2015. Alcoa has until next June to give notice that it won't renew the contract.

At a last month, the governor told Alcoa employees and supporters that South Carolina values the plant.

"I do not want to lose a company because utility rates are too high," she said. "It goes right to the heart of what we're saying: The cost of business has to be low."

Haley said the issue is bigger than the one company.

"I'm going to do everything and anything possible not only to help Alcoa, but that whole region," she said. "We've got to make sure that its competitive for any company to come in there."
