Hanahan Hiring New Police Chief
Administration, council plans ambitious hiring process.

The City of Hanahan is looking for a new chief of police. The job was posted online late last week and the application period ends Oct. 12.
Hanahan Police Chief Donald Wilcox retired in July after 24 years with the department. City Administrator John Cribb said they're losing a good public servant in Wilcox, but the city is excited to find its next strong leader for the police force.
Particularly, Cribb said the city is looking for someone with experience in crime prevention and community policing. They want a chief with a philosophy that goes beyond writing tickets — getting officers out of the patrol car to meet business owners and visit with residents.

"Every interaction with the public doesn't have to be negative," Cribb said.
The starting salary is expected to be roughly $55,000. The city wants someone with at least 10 years of experience, including time in a leadership position. The chief will oversee 34 officers with a $3 million budget.

The mayor and council will make the final decision on a hire. Cribb said he hops to have applicants interviewed by the council in late October and have a decision by Nov. 8.
Cribb also noted that there isn't likely to be a shortage of candidates. "People were calling about the position before we even advertised for it," he said.
