Hanahan Police Stop Boat Landing Suicide Attempt

Officer snuck through darkness to catch armed man off guard.

Two Hanahan officers resolved a harrowing suicide attempt at a local boat landing.

Near 10 p.m. on May 6, a Charleston man travelled to the Hanahan's Bettis Boat Landing and waited for everyone to leave, he later told police.

Once alone, he dialed 911 so that the police would be the first to find his body. The man told police that, while on the phone, he pointed the gun at his chest and pulled the trigger, but the gun wouldn't fire.

A Hanahan dispatcher called back and the man told the dispatcher that he was at the boat landing and he would kill himself, accidentally firing the weapon while it was pointed away from his body.

When officers arrived, they used their vehicles as cover while instructing the man to drop the gun. He refused to drop the weapon, but pointed it to the ground, according to police.

While one officer continued to talk with the suspect, a second officer walked in the darkness to get closer to the suspect. Once close enough, the officer deployed his Taser, hitting the man on his arm.

The officers were able to get the gun away from the man and he was admitted to MUSC for a psychological evaluation.
