Heat Advisory for Charleston

The National Weather Service warns of danger as temperature climbs.

Update: The heat advisory for the Charleston area has been extended to 8 p.m. The National Weather Service has also updated its estimates, noting the heat index could climb to 108 degrees this afternoon. The index on Saturday could reach 118 degrees. 

Original: The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory for the Charleston area, including Charleston, Dorchester and Berkeley counties, from 1-6 p.m.

The NWS has also issued an excessive heat watch from Saturday morning through Saturday evening.

On Friday, the heat index is expected to reach 105-107 degrees for several hours. It will likely climb even higher Saturday.

"Consecutive days of excessive heat has a cumulative affect on the human body," the NWS notes in its advisory. Illnesses can possibly include heat exhaustion or heat stroke.

NWS suggestions include:

  • Drinking lots of fluids
  • Stay in an air-conditioned room
  • Stay out of the sunshine
  • Check on relatives/neighbors
  • Don't leave children or pets in cars, even with the window rolled down.
