Henryville Thanks Hanahan High, Other Supporters

"You feel a little bit better about mankind."

The fatal tornado that tore through Henryville, Ind., on March 3 left the small community finding necessary repairs at every corner. Hundreds of homes, schools and other buildings were pulled out of the ground by the powerful twister.

One area hard hit was the Henryville High School, which has since found support from all across the nation.

In March, the Hanahan High School athletic department hosted . Even after the tragic storm, the Indiana school announced it would move forward with a spring season.

"In spite of the devastation, they want to get back on the field, so we are pitching in to help," said Hanahan High athletic director Dawn Smith.

The event at Hanahan High included sporting events with 100 percent of the proceeds going to Henryville, along with auctions for Hanahan High jerseys. Smith has sent a check for $9,000, earmarked for the athletic program.

Assistant principal and athletic director Bill Niece marveled at the support for Henryville in a Courier-Journal article. 

"I think it's amazing that so many people are donating time and money to this," Niece told the paper. "It's been an amazing thing to just sit back and watch. You feel a little bit better about mankind."
