Honor Flight 'Recruits' Among Seniors

Lowcountry Honor Flight Network representative speaks at JOY annual fish fry Thursday.

Bubba Kennedy has a mission: getting the remaining World War II veterans in the Lowcountry to Washington, D.C.

No small feat, Kennedy is now preparing for the next Lowcountry Honor Flight nearly a year out, April 21, 2012. On Thursday night, he spoke to Summerville Baptist Church's JOY Fellowship, a senior group, at its annual fish fry.

Lowcountry Honor Flight Network is a volunteer group dedicating to flying World War II veterans from the Charleston airport to Washington, D.C., so they can visit the World War II Memorial and other national monuments.

"I'm recruiting, and I'm looking for donations," Kennedy said. Each flight can cost the organization about $60,000.

The last Lowcountry Honor Flight took 117 veterans to the nation's capital.

This Lowcountry division of the national effort began about two years. It normally has two flights a year, but will not have a second flight this year due to lack of experienced volunteers to help escort the veterans.
