How To Calm Your Spirit When Your Heart Becomes Fearful

Psalm 37:24
When he falls, he shall not be hurled headlong; Because the LORD is the One who holds his hand.  The steps of a man are established by the LORD; And He delights in his way.

Psalm 5:11,12
But let all who take refuge in Thee be glad, Let them ever sing for joy; And mayest Thou shelter them, That those who love Thy name may exult in Thee. For it is Thou who dost bless the righteous man, O LORD, Thou dost surround him with favor as with a shield.

Proverbs 3:1,2,3,5,6
My son, do not forget my teaching…And peace it will add to you.; Bind them around your neck, Write them on the tablet of your heart. Trust in the LORD with all your heart, And do not lean on your own understanding.  In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He will direct your paths.

When your heart is fearful, God has a plan for you.  He wants you to listen to His words, because it is through them that you will find your way out of the fear that is gripping you.   He says, “Do not forget my teaching…and peace it will add to you” (Proverbs 3:1,3).  In other words: when your mind gets anxious, flick into God’s words, those helpful Bible verses that He has designed as a special prescription and promise to bring you back to peace. That’s the plan.  That’s the strategy.  God’s words are your shield against fear and all the things that keep you awake at night that may or might not ever happen. The first verse to repeat to yourself to calm your spirit is “Cast your anxiety on Him because He cares for you” (1 Peter 5:7).  This will remind you that God cares about every little thought you ever had.  He is asking you to give Him your worries, because He is bigger than anything or anyone. The second heart soothing verse is, “Trust the Lord with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding.  In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will direct your paths (Proverbs 3:5,6).  In this verse God is telling you that He has plans for you and will point you in the right direction, if you just ask.  So take a step. Try something new. God keep you safe.  Even in the tiniest of things, whether it is a conversation you are dreading, a task that you wonder if you are up for, or something that you are specifically afraid of, ask God to be with you, directing your steps and your words.  And finally, before you start your day, visualize yourself putting on God’s protective “shield of favor.”  When you have the Creator of the entire universe as your personal shield and guide, you can be at peace knowing that no harm will come to you and you are right where you should be.
