Whoever then humbles himself as this child, he is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.

God has a strategy for having a great day and a great forever:  “Have the attitude of a servant.” Keep in mind that Jesus, the son of God, the King of Kings, humbled Himself like a servant and washed people’s feet. And He’s the One whose example we should all be striving to follow. Sometimes, however, being servant-like might not sound so very thrilling and you may wonder in your secret, not-so-great heart, how having a humble, helpful attitude can benefit you.  The obvious answer is: it plays better.  People like people who are helpful to them.  The nicer you are to others, the more they will like you and then in turn they will be more helpful to you. But a less obvious benefit is that having a servant-like attitude calms your spirit when you have to go into new, challenging situations.  No matter what circumstance you find yourself in, when your sincere opening line is, “How can I help you?” it softens the spirit of the person who is hearing your words.  Your attitude and your words will communicate that you are on the same side, the same team.  That will ease their anxiety and yours. And God loves when His children work together. He says, “If the two of you agree on earth about anything that they may ask, it shall be done for them.” (Matthew 18:19)   The third personal benefit that you will reap from having the attitude of servant is:  it allows you to focus on that which you can control, instead of things that you can’t control. You may feel distressed or frustrated because of “things” in your life that you wish were different, but you can’t do anything about. Yet, as you consciously shift your mind from that which is “tricky” for you, to the concrete strategy of deciding to act in a servant-like manner, it refocuses you to a more positive place.  As a result, your mood will lighten; your spirit will lift.  When you approach each day with the attitude of a servant, you are doing the one thing that you can do which is controlling your actions; and the only thing that really matters which is pleasing God.  When you are serving or helping others you are in fact doing what God considers the greatest commandment, which is to “Love your neighbor and yourself.”  With any circumstance in your life, you might not know what to do.  You might not know where your road will end up. But if you adopt the simple strategy of letting your attitude be that of a servant, you will hit a home run. You will truly be helping others and you will feel better because they will feel better.  God will be pleased and the best news is: you will be doing what God wants you to do.  That’s how you stay on God’s path.  That’s your relationships turn out the way that God wants.  And that’s the way you will feel better; this day and everyday.
