How To Hear For God’s Voice

John 14:26,27

"But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you. "Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you; not as the world gives, do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, nor let it be fearful.

Cast all your anxiety upon Him because He cares for you.

No matter what is going on in your life, the best place to get advice is found in the Bible.  That is because the verses in the Bible are one of God’s specific ways of talking to you.  But just as in any good relationship, if you don’t spend enough time talking with and listening to someone, how can you really know them, or they you?  If you don’t let a person know what is bothering you, you deny them the opportunity to give you what could be the best advice of your life.  And God is the best advice-giver of all because He already knows all the answers and what is best for everybody. The good news is that God doesn’t want to keep His will for your life a secret.  He wants to point you in the right direction and can “speak” to you through anything in order to point you that way.  But the trick is that sometimes people forget to tell you how to listen for God’s voice.  The first step to hearing what God is saying to you is this:  before you start reading the Bible, your devotional material, or inspirational literature, ask Him to speak to your heart.  It can be in the form of asking for specific advice about what is bothering you or just a general “Tell me what You want me to hear” request.   Read with a spirit of expectation. Believe that God will speak to you through the words that you are reading and He will.   If you are reading the Bible, pick a book and keep reading till something jumps out at you and seems to be an “answer” to your problem. The passage, sentence or message that you can’t stop thinking about is God “talking” to you, giving you hope and direction.  That is Him saying, “Don’t give up.  I’m with you.  See, I’m talking to you.  This is what I want you to do about what you just asked me about.”  Once you have your verse or your message, which is your word from God, write it down.  Put it in your pocket or on your desk where you can see it.  Let the words fill your spirit, so that you can recall them the moment you get anxious about your issue.  Be encouraged!  The fact that you want to “hear” God’s voice shows that He is working in your life. The Creator of the Universe loves you and will point you in the way that you should go in order for your heart to ease and your spirit to ultimately soar.
