I-95 Detour Thru Goose Creek Ends Early

Lane closures had sent wide loads far south to Highway 52.

Contractors have finished work on Interstate 95 repairs 19 days early, ending a that sent wide loads through Goose Creek.

Work began in September after an inspection of the bridge just north of Santee near mile marker 98 showed concrete deteriorating.

The project was expected to take two months, completing on Nov. 16. But crews with contractor Carolina Bridge Co. reported earlier in the month that they were and announced last week that work was done.

Repair work had reduced traffic to one lane and cut the speed limit through the construction site to 45 mph, causing heavy congestion on the busy interstate.

With the reduced lane width during construction, all wide-load trailers had been rerouted. Trucks with loads wider than 8-and-a-half feet were sent down Interstate 26 to University Boulevard, and on to U.S. 52 through Goose Creek and Berkeley County. The detour sent the trucks east of Lake Moultrie and on up to Manning.
