Report: Romney Wins S.C. Delegates

With a waiting game over on Berkeley County votes, statewide loser wins 1st Congressional District.

Final results aren't certified yet, but an analysis of the totals for Saturday's GOP Presidential Preference Primary suggests that Mitt Romney isn't leaving South Carolina empty-handed after all.

Former House Speaker , handing Romney a defeat in a state he was expected to win just days earlier.

South Carolina's 25 delegates will be divvied up this way: Two delegates will be handed out based on the winner in each of the state's seven congressional districts and 11 delegates going to the statewide winner.

Blog site Daily Kos was waiting on stragling Berkeley County votes before reporting its findings, but learned Wednesday that the results for a couple different precincts were collected as one total (Goose Creek 1 and Goose Creek 2 were reported as "Goose Creek 1&2").

With no new votes to add, Romney, the former Massachusetts governor, narrowly won the state's redrawn 1st Congressional District, according to Daily Kos analysis. The district includes Beaufort, a small portion of coastal Colleton County and pieces of Charleston, Dorchester and Berkeley counties.

By the website's math, Romney collected 36,606 to former House Speaker Newt Gingrich's 35,195. A win in the district would mean a handful of S.C. delegates for Romney at the national convention.

Chris Whitmire, spokesman for the election commission, said the SCGOP would be making the call: "I understand the party is making the determination of who won each primary by looking at the precinct-level results."

Calls to the SCGOP to confirm the Daily Kos analysis were not returned.

Counties are still in the process of certifying results, so final numbers aren't available yet, but not likely to swing enough to change the vote.
