Local Grad is SEC's Freshman of the Week
Welch recognized for early success with USC women's basketball.
University of South Carolina freshman Aleighsa Welch, a Goose Creek grad, has been picked as the SEC Freshman of the Week.
A forward, Welch has provided a strong presence on the court for the Gamecocks.
In it's announcement, the SEC listed a few of the reasons Welch had a great week:

- Scored in double figures both games last week, leading the team with 14.5 points per game.
- Pulled in 6.5 rebounds per game, including nine of 13 on the offensive end.
- Career-high 19 points to lead team to win over #24/21 Vanderbilt.
- Six of seven rebounds against Commodores came on offensive end, the fourth time this season she’s had six offensive boards, which is the fourth-most by a freshman in school history.
- Was second on the team with 10 points in win at Florida.
- Blocked two shots against the Gators, including one late in the second half during the Florida rally.
