Local Target Getting Grocery Remodel

Last of four local stores expected to cut the ribbon in October.

There will be some fresh competition this fall for our local grocers — Target has begun remodeling the Rivers Avenue location to accommodate a larger grocery selection.

It's the last of the four local Targets to get the upgrade and one of 90 announced by the retail chain in April.

For years, the location has stocked cereals, coffee, a few frozen entrees and beverages. But the change will relocate the large seasonal section to offer a full complement of groceries, including fresh produce and meats.

In announcing the work, Target's senior vice president of grocery, Annette Miller, said the chain was looking forward to the completed upgrades.

"By remodeling these stores, we bring an expanded offering of fresh food and added convenience to our guests in these communities," Miller said.

The groceries won't be the only change. There will also be a Starbucks cafe where guest services currently stands. That fuction will be relocated. The remodel should be completed by Oct. 14.

The Motley Fool blog pointed out earlier this week that Target's growing presence in the grocery market is pinching traditional supermarkets.

And a recent NPR report highlighted a study showing young adults were getting their grocery essentials at Target and Walmart.

"Mass merchants are becoming the cross section; everyone goes there for different reasons," said Scott Mushkin, Managing Director of Food and Drug Retailing at investment firm Jefferies. "But it's a really tough study for the traditional grocery business."
