Marrinton Elementary School Walks To School

Marrington Elementary recently partnered with Safe Routes to School Resource Center to participate in International Walk to School Day! The goal of Walk to School Day is to develop an awareness of pedestrian safety skills and create safer walking environments for everyone in their respective communities.

Walking to school is a great way for children to get exercise and it also helps reduce traffic near schools.  Unfortunately, many students are unable to walk because conditions are not safe.  The long-term goal of this event is to increase walking and make the neighborhoods safer for children walking to school.

Listed below are some helpful tips for walking safely with your child:

 • Never allow children under age 10 to cross streets alone.  Children younger than 10 may not understand how to cross safely.

• Always model and teach your child safe pedestrian behavior.

• Instruct children to look left, right, and then left again when crossing streets, and to continue looking as they cross.

• Make sure children don’t run into streets or dart from between parked cars.

• Require children to wear reflective materials and carry a flashlight at dawn, dusk, and in bad weather.

At Marrrington Elementary every child is valued and their safety is always important!
