Mayor Signs Proclamation for Black History Month
Mayor and City Council recognize black history.

Goose Creek Mayor Michael Heitzler signed a proclamation declaring February “Black History Month” in the City of Goose Creek.
Heitzler and Councilmember John McCants met with representatives of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) Goose Creek Branch to sign the proclamation, which recognizes the contributions of African Americans in our country’s history.
During this month, the NAACP commemorates the 150th anniversary of Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation, the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, held in August 1963, and honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s tireless efforts toward civil rights and Councilmember John McCants first African American elected to Goose Creek City Council.

This year’s Black History Month theme is At the Crossroads of Freedom and Equality: The Emancipation Proclamation and the March on Washington.
The Goose Creek NAACP Branch will host a program 6 p.m. Monday, Feb. 25, at Berkeley Electric, 2 Springhall Dr. This free event is open to the public and all are encouraged to attend.
