No Charges in Ladson Road Shooting

Sheriff's Office says man was defending himself and his car.

Determing that the incident was self-defense, the Charleston County Sheriff's Office will not file charges against the driver last week.

Justin Rivers, 31, of Charleston, was stopped at the intersection of Ladson Road and U.S. 78 at 4:15 a.m. March 13. Police report that 31-year-old Artremain Grant of Adam's Run tried to open the rear passenger side door and began banging on the window.

Fearing a carjacking, Rivers reportedly pulled his gun from his glove compartment and fired two rounds. Fearing an attack, Rivers drove away from the scene and stopped up U.S. 78 when he had cell reception. Grant died at the scene.

In a statement released Tuesday, the Sheriff's Office argues that Rivers had a right to defend himself and his car under the South Carolina Protection of Persons and Property Act.

The car that Grant got out of before approaching Rivers fled the scene has been described as a dark color sedan.
