Starting Friday, July 1, any trashed televisions or computers will have to go in the car instead of on the curb.
In May 2010, the South Carolina legislature approved a new requirement that manufacturers of laptops, tablets, computer monitors, televisions, and printers to create recycling programs for these devices.
The law also bans residents from knowingly pitching these items in with trash destined for the landfill, and it bans landfill operators from knowingly accepting the e-waste.
Twenty-five states have similar laws, according to the Electronic Take Back Coalition, including North Carolina and Virginia. In signing the bill last year, Gov. Mark Sanford called it, "a commonsense way to promote more recycling and reuse of electronic devices, and to discourage the disposal of environmentally harmful materials in our landfills."
Berkeley County residents can dump their desktop computer at any Berkeley County Convenience Center. The nearest location to Goose Creek is the Oakley Road Convenience Center located at 606 Oakley Road in Moncks Corner.
Several electronics stores have recycling programs, including Office Depot, Staples, Best Buy, and Radio Shack, as well as most major cell-phone providers.
