On the Mend, Lucky is Getting Frisky

Recovering dog is getting playful, no leads in abuse investigation.

The pit mix found last week wandering Liberty Hill with a chain embedded in his neck is feeling a lot better. "He's starting to get frisky," said Cathy Childress, operations manager for the Doc Williams SPCA.

The chain around his neck was so tight that it had worked into his skin, causing an infection. A veterinarian surgically removed the chain and damaged tissue. The SPCA is seeking donations to go toward Lucky's medical bills.

The organization is still fostering Lucky at the animal shelter's main office near Moncks Corner as he recovers from the surgery, but he's expected to be up for adoption once he improves.

John Nutter, chief officer for Berkeley County Animal Control, says he's seen other cases where dogs have been tied too tight to a chain, but none as severe as Lucky. The owner in this case is still unknown.

"We don't have any really good leads," Nutter said. "What we're really looking for is someone who recognizes that dog."
