Outdoor Lab Bustling at Marrington Elementary

Spiders, birds and rain studied in unique setting, thanks to parents and teachers.

Marrington Elementary's new outdoor learning laboratory has quickly become a popular opportunity for students. It exemplifies the power of school-parent partnerships. During the 2011-2012 school year, the school's Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) held a "Pennies for Projects" fundraiser. Students' and parents’ spare change was invested in the highest-priority projects including the outdoor laboratory. This environment allows students to experience various observation stations and incorporate writing, reading, and science. Stations include a spider web frame, bird feeder, rain gage and benches that transform into writing tables. —Berkeley County School District
