Police Chase Ends in Fatality Near Bonneau

Reportedly fleeing from St. Stephen Police, driver hit tree.

A Bonneau man died Tuesday afternoon in a single-car accident while allegedly trying to run from St. Stephen officers.

Ronald Smith, 53, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Berkeley County Coroner Bill Salisbury. Smith died from head trauma, and he was not wearing his seat belt.

At 5:15 p.m., St. Stephen Police officers were in pursuit of Smith's GMC Sonoma on Bull Head Road when the truck ran off the roadway and hit a tree, according to Salisbury.

The accident is under investigation by the coroner's office and the S.C. Highway Patrol. The Multidisciplinary Accident Investigation Team is assisting with the investigation.
