Rep. Crosby on proposed mandated recycling plans for businesses

By S.C. Rep. Bill Crosby, R-District 117 (North Charleston, Goose Creek)

The legislature reconvened on Jan. 11, and already it has been a very busy year.  This week was dominated largely by work on this year’s state budget.

You may have also noticed in recent weeks some newspaper ads, and phone calls from a Columbia based special interest group regarding a recycling bill that is being considered before my committee. This group is spending a considerable amount of money in an attempt to influence my vote on the issue.  Because the ads are somewhat misleading, I wanted to take this opportunity to clear up any confusion there may be on the matter.

First, I would like to point out that I think the bill was drafted with the best of intentions to increase the amount of trash that is recycled in our state, and help protect our environment for future generations. Certainly, this is a goal we can all support.  However, the current version of the legislation goes a step too far by mandating that businesses have a recycling plan, approved by the county, before being allowed to renew their liquor license. The last thing businesses need is one more government regulation.

Times are tough and I believe it is the responsibility of government to get out of the way and let the small businesses that built and sustain this nation grow and prosper. I know proponents of the legislation say it’s just a small expense, just a small added burden. But there are far too many businesses out there just hanging on, struggling to find a way to make ends meet and I refuse to be a part of any measure that may just push a few of them right over the edge and out of business.
