Red Bank Crew Boss Charged with Assault

Man accused of hitting a laborer with a rake.

Goose Creek Police arrested the boss on a Red Bank Road water line project Monday, charging the man with assault in an alleged incident with a laborer.

The victim and a witness told police that Louis Smith, 38, of Cornelia, Ga., arrived at the work site along Red Bank Road just prior to 8:30 a.m. Monday.

The crew has been working on water lines along Red Bank Road for several weeks.

Smith allegedly grabbed a rake from the back of his truck and approached the victim, Joseph Sims of Bremen, Ga. Smith allegedly struck Sims on the back with the rake.

Sims said he put Smith in a headlock to protect himself until another worker could come over to help. When he let go, Smith fled the scene in his truck.

Smith later told police that he had a bad day and "flipped out," according to officers. Smith was charged with third degree assault and battery.
