Rivers Only Candidate Certified for District 15 Ballot

After the most dramatic election filing season in recent memory, we're down to one in the new S.C. House District 15.

The S.C. Election Commission certified the petition filing of Samuel Rivers Jr. earlier this month, securing his spot on the ballot. But the commission has rejected the filing of Marian Redish.

Both candidates were removed from primaries earlier this year: Rivers was a GOP candidate and Redish was the lone Democrat. The S.C. Supreme Court ruled in May that hundreds of first-time candidates failed to follow an obscure campaign filing requirement and were disqualified.

That sent both candidates out into the community to collect enough support to appear on the ballot as petition candidates. That meant going door-to-door to find signatures from 5 percent of the voters in the district — in this case, 786 signatures.

But those voters still had to be verified by local and state election officials who vet the list for duplicates or voters not registered in the district. Rivers submitted more than 150 additional signatures to make sure he met the requirement.

Rivers told Patch on Tuesday that he'll continue to campaign, even without another name on the ballot.  

"I'm not going to take this for granted," River said. "I'm going to be connecting with business owners, educator and voters. I'm still going to work for it."
