Several local schools are supporting Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Here are a few of the events, provided by the Berkeley County School District:
- Stratford High is hosting events every day this week to raise awareness, leading up to their Pink Whistle Game on Oct. 21 against West Ashley. The game is part of the S. C. Football Officials’ Association’s efforts to raise money for the Susan G. Komen Foundation. Football officials, players and cheerleaders across the state will be wearing pink to raise funds. Also, students are encouraged to wear pink to school on Thursday and to the game on Friday. Last year Stratford raised nearly $1,700 for the cause, and the goal is to double that amount this year. Â
- Other ‘pink’ activities at Stratford this week include: a memory banner signing, a challenge to create a pink ribbon chain that wraps around the school, a pink candy counting contest and sales of pink spirit beads, t-shirts, baked goods, lemonade and lollipops.
- Sedgefield Middle will be hosting a ‘Pink-Out’ dress day on Friday and a ‘Pink Soiree.'
- The Hanahan High volleyball team recently held a ‘Dig for the Cure’ match at Hanahan High against Academic Magnet High. The donations raised from the match will help a member of the Hanahan community who is currently fighting the disease. "We hope to educate our students so they can be more pro-active about their health," said Wendy Anderson, Hanahan's head volleyball coach. "I tell my players that cancer does not know race, gender, or age. Cancer does not know if you are a good person or not. Cancer can happen to your sister, your brother, your mom or dad – it can even happen to you."
- Westview Primary held a 'Pink Pelicans Parent Night Out,' where parents dropped their children off at school to enjoy a few hours to themselves. They also held a 'Cookies for a Cause' day, where they sold close to 400 cookies. Students created memorials for family members to hang on the school's Memorial Wall, and participated in a "Linking Up for a Cure" event, where they sold pink chain links and joined them together to show support. Students and staff wore pink on 'pink out day,' and the child nutrition team served up a 'pink-themed lunch.' For the fifth year in a row, the school’s staff walked as the 'Westview Primary Pink Pelicans' in the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure.
- The district office is also hosting a 'Wearing of the Pink' day and a walk to raise funds Oct. 28.
