The state's Department of Public Safety has awarded nearly $180,000 to the Berkeley County Sheriff's Office for DUI enforcement and education programs.

This is the third year that county law enforcement has received the award, which will fund efforts to reduce drunk driving incidents and fatalities through Sept. 2012.

According to the Berkeley County Sheriff's Office, for the first two years of the program, the team has amassed over 323 DUI arrests, issued over 965 speeding citations, 2,097 warnings and 382 seatbelt violations. Deputies have had more than 76 checkpoints and made roughly 18 public presentations regarding DUI-awareness.
