Standoff Ends Safely in Hunters Woods

Man allegedly shoots three holes in the roof, demands to see wife before surrendering.

A more than two-hour standoff early Sunday in Hunters Woods ended after a man, barricaded in his home, allegedly shot three holes in to the roof, demanding to see his wife and warning police to stay away from the home.

Officers initially respond to the home at 156 Fox Chase Drive at 10:40 p.m. Saturday due to a call of shots fired.

John Edward Svagerko, 47, was reportedly by himself in a bedroom in his home when he told family members standing outside of the room that he wanted to see his wife. He then allegedly shot the gun, prompting his family to leave the house and call police.

Svagerko's brother was able to make contact with him. Svagerko refused to come outside and warned police not to come inside.

An initial police report notes Svagerko would go on to pace the house, turning light on and off as he went from room to room.

Svagerko's estranged wife arrived on scene. Just after 1 a.m. Sunday, Svagerko walked out the door unarmed and turned himself in.

John Svagerko was cited for discharging a firearm and fined $1,092. He was held briefly Sunday at the Hill-Finklea Detention Center.
