Soothe Your Troubled Heart By Changing “Tricky Times” to “Learning Times”

James 1:2-4,13,14
Consider it all joy, my brethren, when you encounter various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance.  And let endurance have its perfect result, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing. Let no one say when he is tempted, "I am being tempted by God"; for God cannot be tempted by evil, and He Himself does not tempt anyone.

Psalm 91:15

He will call upon Me, and I will answer him I will be with him in trouble; I will rescue him, and honor him.

When “tricky” things happen, people spend a whole lot of wasted time asking “Why?” And then they go one step further, in thinking that God “sent” the yucky thing to punish them or test them in some way.  Well, first of all, “Why” isn’t a good question because it doesn’t move you forward.  Things just happen.  God doesn’t cause the “bad” thing to happen, He is there to comfort you and walk you safely down your road.  God’s not in the tempting business, God is in the Love business.  So when your life is topsy-turvy, not so great, and you’re feeling confused and overwhelmed: remember: “God works all things together for good.” (Romans 8:28)  That simply means that God manipulates all the details in the universe together so that the best thing happens…for the universe and for you!   You don’t know why things are happening or what’s going to happen.  But God does. That’s why when things are unsettling and you feel anxious, change how you think about them.  Do what you can do, which is to be as kind as you can be, then trust God to take care of the rest.  “Tricky” times aren’t what they seem anyway. They are either Satan, trying to throw bad things your way so that you will be unsettled and then you won’t want to “do” your ministry; or they are events that are just happening so that you can learn new things and step up in new ways that you wouldn’t otherwise have, if your road had been so very easy.  “Tricky” times aren’t good or bad, they are just “times.”  It’s when you decide that they are the most horrible times in life, that they become overwhelming.  Change the title of your “tricky” time, to your “learning time.”  Ask yourself, “What new thing am I learning or doing because of what is currently going on.” That way, you are back in control.  You can’t change the stock market, but you can learn how to research financial issues so that you can educate yourself.  You can help another person with the knowledge that you do have about anything.  God comforts us when we are in troubled times, specifically so we can turn around and help someone else. (2 Corinthians 1:4)  So the next time you start to feel anxious, remind yourself that God is in charge, because He knows best and you will not fall.  Then open the eyes of your spirit up to what you can learn and what you can give specifically because of what is happening in your world. That way, you will begin to be a heart-soother and you will be doubly blessed because of it.
