Teachers on Safari

Club sends local educators to national outdoor education program.

It may be getting a little wild in area science classrooms this year.

Over the summer, teachers Alexandra Davis of Hanahan Middle School and Marissa Echenique from Westview Elementary visited the American Wilderness Leadership School in Jackson, Wyo.

The two were offered the opportunity by the Safari Club International of the Lowcountry. "We hope what we're doing is making a real contribution to the education process," said Robert Shealy of the local Safari Club in a release.

Through the in-depth educational program, attendees learn about conservation and stream ecology in programs hosted by the Department of Natural Resources and the National Forestry Commission. They also learned about outdoor survival skills, archery and white water rafting.

"We're excited to introduce the 'outdoor classroom' to our students," said Echenique.  "We will also be sharing what we learned with other science teachers throughout the district, so children across the county can gain a greater appreciation for their environment through this curriculum."
