Think Pink: Charleston Breast Cancer Awareness Events

Here's how you can participate, pledge support and donate to the cause.

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and whether you love to shop, attend events, walk or run, there are tons of different ways to support the cause. Check out the list below of opportunities to go pink in the Charleston area:

  • Through Oct. 25, you can purchase a Pink Card at Tanger Outlet for a special savings at participating outlet stores. A $1 card gives a 25 percent discount on one item. Proceeds benefit the Hollings Cancer Center.
  • Tuesday, the Charleston Mariott Business Council is hosting a Rally for the Cure golf tournament at the Daniel Island Country Club. The event begins at 11:30 a.m.
  • Sea Kayak Carolina is hosting a Charleston Kayak Tour for Breast Cancer Awareness on Oct. 7. A $10 donation is suggested.
  • Trek Women hosts the Breast Cancer Awareness Ride at 10 a.m. Oct. 13 at Awendaw Green/Sewee Outpost.
  • The Jerry Zucker Ride for Hope will be at 8:30 a.m. Oct. 14. at Awendaw Green.
  • For those looking for an old-fashioned pub crawl with rock music thrown in, Rockers4Knockers hits Shem Creek in Mount Pleasant on Oct. 14 — a fun way to spend a Sunday.
  • Roper St. Francis Cancer Care hosts Ladies Night Out on Oct. 16, from 5–8 p.m. in the lobby of Roper Hospital in downtown Charleston.
  • The Komen Lowcountry Race For a Cure will be held on Daniel Island Oct. 20.

There are even more ways to spread breast cancer awareness this month by supporting national organizations that are fighting for a cure.

You can also support breast cancer research by affixing a special stamp to your mail. The U.S. Postal Service has been selling a stamp commemorating breast cancer awareness for the past 15 years. The agency has raised $75 million so far for research programs at the National Institutes of Health and the Department of Defense.

The American Cancer Society’s annual Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk is organized nationwide and so far more than 8 million people have walked for this cause and raised about $460 million.

Research centers like Susan G. Komen for the Cure are selling pink ribbon merchandise and it’s a twofer — retail therapy and donating to a cause that affects millions.
