To Keep Your Spirit From Sinking Don’t Throw Your Pearls Before Swine

Matthew 7:6,7,24,25

Do not give what is holy to dogs, and do not throw your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn and tear you to pieces.  Ask, and it shall be given to you; seek, and you shall find; knock, and it shall be opened to you. Therefore everyone who hears these words of Mine, and acts upon them, may be compared to a wise man, who built his house upon the rock. And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and burst against that house; and yet it did not fall, for it had been founded upon the Rock.

When the troubles in your life feel like rain that is so heavy, the house of your heart might just blow away, there are two things to keep in mind:  it won’t because God is with you and don’t throw your pearls before swine.  You are the pearl and the negative forces of darkness are the swine.  “Swine” (besides being another name for “pigs”) are all the things that occur in your life that are negative and anxiety producing.  Thinking about the swine in your life steals your joy and peace because they are the people and situations that have come into your world that you can’t change.   That’s why God doesn’t want you to throw your “pearls” before swine.  When you give all your time, energy, and love to someone who does not appreciate it, you are throwing your pearls before swine.  When you give up your sense of peace by thinking about occurrences in your life that you can’t change, like the stock market, a health issue, or simply wishing some else were different in some way, you are throwing your pearls before swine. All you can really do about any one “thing” is: give it your best shot.  You can’t control another person or the really big things in life. You can only control how you think about the event or the person, and then as a result, what you say and what you do.  When you focus on the rain in your life instead of how you can bring sunshine in to the lives of others, you are throwing your pearls before swine. And you know what happens when you throw your pearls before swine? The swine will turn, trample and devour you.  Do not look at the swine.  Do not look at the rain.  Turn your eyes instead on the One who is keeping you dry. Dwell on God’s promise that even though the rain and floods may come, you will not fall because your faith is in God. If you ask Him, He will answer all your questions and direct all your paths; and in due season, if you don’t give up, everything will be all right.  Just keep your pearls on!
