Hurricane Irene Could Threaten Area Early Saturday

Tuesday 5 a.m.: Overnight, a more violent scenario has emerged as Tropical Storm Irene became Hurricane Irene and the projected path puts the Lowcountry on notice.

The National Hurricane Center is expecting the storm could reach 110 mph winds as it runs up the Florida coast and makes landfall along coastal Georgia or the Lowcountry.

The National Weather Service notes the probability is increasing of tropical storm or hurricane conditions in the Lowcountry.

Lowcounty residents should continue to monitor this storm and make sure they have a hurricane plan, including an evacuation route and a storm kit.
