Goose Creek full back Virgil Smalls, a powerhouse player in the Gator's championship season, signed Wednesday with South Carolina State University.
News of Smalls' broke after a visit last month.
"The school has what I need to succeed in my life and get my degree," Smalls said. "There's an enthusiastic coach and staff I really like."

He won't be too far away and he's keeping his eye on his former teammates who will be defending the state title in the fall.

"I wish I could stay one more year just to go to state and do it all over again," Smalls said. "It was phenominal."Â
