Vote Expected to Pay Off Crowfield Course Loan

Goose Creek City Council looking to resolve one of its last debt obligations.

The Goose Creek City Council will vote Tuesday on whether to pay off a 2003 loan used to purchase the Crowfield Golf and Country Club.

If approved the $2.5 million loan will be resolved in October, saving the city more than $132,000 in interest.

"The defeasance of the debt will render the operation debt-free and provide maximum cash flow flexibility," wrote City Administrator Dennis Harmon in a message to council members.

The city has been banking $44,000 a month toward a golf savings account, which will fund the bulk of the payoff.

The operation is in the red, but staff have been attempting to lower overhead at the course and pull in more golfers to use the amenity.

The city purchased the course to protect the site from development and buffer property values for neighboring Crowfield communities. Last year, the council changed the zoning at the site for an added protection and have recently begun talks for further protections through deed restrictions.

The golf course is one of the last debt obligations on the city's books. On Tuesday, council also will consider paying off two water program loans.
