The long wait for a new congressional map is over. After a month of behind-the-scenes negotiations, the state legislature Tuesday. The Pee Dee/Horry County region will now be home to District 7.
There was some talk of Goose Creek and Hanahan entering a sharply different District 7. But, in the end, the boundaries in this area are much the same they have been for the past decade, putting most in the community in Rep. Tim Scott's District 1. The difference is that Scott will now also be representing Beaufort, Bluffton and Hilton Head.
Things were getting done in Columbia, but they were not getting done in Washington. On Thursday, House leaders had to withdraw plans for a key vote to raise the nation's debt limit when it became clear that rank-and-file members weren't supportive. That rank-and-file .

There was one decision in Washington this week, though. On Tuesday, the United States Postal Service announced it was looking to cut some post offices and replace them with kiosk locations in community centers and grocery stores. Most of the Lowcountry was spared, but Berkeley County post offices in Cordesville and Russellville were among the 3,700 the USPS will consider closing.
