Week in Review: Shoplifting Ring, Hot Weather, and American Idol

A look at what we were talking about this week.

Shoplifting Ring
When news first broke that Mr. Flaps Pawn Shop was taped off, the assumption was that there had been a robbery. The truth was .

Felicia Sanders Smith, 44, of 558 Butternut Road in Summerville, was valued at $10,000 or more. Police allege that Smith, a family member of Mr. Flaps' owner, was sending a group of six shoplifters out with a list of things she was looking for. She would then allegedly sell the items, mostly pet supplies, at the Goose Creek pawn shop or online.

The store has reopened and police are looking for the shoplifters.

American Idol
The Lowcountry houses many aspiring superstars. This week, several thousand more packed hotels from the Charleston peninsula to Goose Creek. It was the first time in four years that and the opportunity brought out as many as 10,000 singers.

Some were better than others, but even a few talented voices were in front of the producers. Our favorite? Carla Rich, who was more than ready to try again. "I might come back to the next audition this year," she said.

More Heat
There were a few days reprieve, but 2011's intense summer heat Thursday. The National Weather Service warned of heat indexes around 110 degrees due to high temps and heavy humidity.

There's not much relief for the next week, either. The heat index is expected to hit 105 degrees each day. Stay inside, stay cool and stay hydrated.

Lucky on the Mend
The Doc Williams SPCA is after he was found wandering the Liberty Hill neighborhood with a chain so tight it was embedded in his neck. After surgery and some TLC, the SPCA staff say he's "starting to get frisky."

The SPCA is seeking donations to go toward Lucky's medical bills while Berkeley County Animal Control is still looking for a lead in the case.

Sports
Several sports headlines this week. The most timely of them would be for the American Legion Baseball League. Goose Creek's Post 166 is hosting the games at Goose Creek High School and Charleston Southern University.

Hanahan's 8U softball team, the Dixie Darlings will be in Pineville, La. They've been holding fundraisers for the cost of the trip.

Goose Creek basketball coach Brad Dobbels will beto serve as an assistant coach for Barclay Radebauch at Charleston Southern University.

And, finally, Goose Creek's Katelyn Dambaugh was Round of 32 at the U.S. Girls Junior Championship. She was the runner-up in last year's competition.
