Week in Review: Trains, Tropical Storms, and Sales Taxes

Also: A fatal accident Wednesday and we've got a new debt limit.

The week started with an accident on the tracks at Red Bank Road and U.S. 52 … again! John Arthell Davis, 40,  of 440 Indigo Road was charged with stopping his Jeep on the tracks. Davis was thrown from the vehicle when it was struck by an Amtrack train late Saturday.

Early in the week, the controversial agreement to increase the country's debt limit The deal resolved the debt limit issue so that everyone could focus on the larger crisis: jobs.

Spicing up our standard weather coverage (have you heard that), we spent a good part of the week obsessed with Tropical Storm Emily. It was looking like we were going to get hit by 70 mph winds. Then it looked like we were going to lose some sand as the storm ran off the coast. But then in the Caribbean. There's a chance she could pull herself back together, but that's next week's news.

Details were slow to emerge from a fatal Wednesday on Treeland Drive. Lonnie Lee Ewan, 30, was pronounced dead at the scene after his motorcycle collided with a car. He was not wearing a helmet. The driver of the other vehicle, Shelbie Lynn Smith of Mint Hill, N.C., with felony DUI and open container in a motor vehicle.
