What To Do When There Is Something You Can’t Control Or Fix

Psalm 143:8-11

Let me hear Thy lovingkindness in the morning; For I trust in Thee; Teach me the way in which I should walk; For to Thee I lift up my soul.  Teach me to do Thy will, For Thou art my God; Let Thy good Spirit lead me on level ground.  For the sake of Thy name, O LORD, revive me.

Romans 5:5

Hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us.

Psalm 141:8
For my eyes are toward Thee, O God, the Lord; In Thee I take refuge.

Proverbs 3:5,6
Trust in the LORD with all your heart, And do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He will make your paths straight.

Lamentations 3:22,23,25

The LORD's lovingkindnesses indeed never cease, For His compassions never fail.  They are new every morning; Great is Thy faithfulness. The LORD is good to those who wait for Him, To the person who seeks Him.

Psalm 27:13,14

I would have despaired unless I had believed that I would see the goodness of the LORD In the land of the living. Wait for the LORD; Be strong, and let your heart take courage; Yes, wait for the LORD.

Psalm 3:3
But Thou, O LORD, art a shield about me, My glory, and the One who lifts my head.

In peace I will both lie down and sleep, For Thou alone, O LORD, dost make me to dwell in safety.

What do you do when you don’t know what to do; when your heart is hurting because there is something in your world that you can’t fix?  When you have absolutely no control over an event, and your heart is about to break, turn to God and take Him up on His promise to revive, restore, and comfort you in your darkest moments.  Times change, people leave and unfair things happen, but God is always there for you.  “He is near to the brokenhearted, and saves those who are crushed in spirit” (Psalm 34:18). The tendency when heart-wrenching things occur is to say, “Why did God let this happen?”  But that’s the wrong question.  God isn’t there to “make” bad things happen.   He is there to pick up the pieces, pour out His strength in you and flood your soul with peace when you are afraid that you will never be the same again.   Let God be your shield against the crushing pain that is threatening to overcome you. Say out loud, even in a very small voice, “I have faith.” You might not feel great right now, but that’s where faith comes in. Faith is the belief in what you haven’t seen; yet you know is coming (Hebrews 11:1). Faith is like when you are standing on your front porch and you call your dog who is in your back yard. You have faith or a belief that he’s coming. Your dog isn’t quite there yet, but you know beyond a shadow of a doubt that he’ll be there any second.  That’s faith. And God is a Rewarder of faith. The more you say it, the more you will feel it.  God is saying to you today, “Let not your heart be troubled nor let it be fearful, believe in me (John 14:1).  So what do you do, when you don’t know what to do?  Pray for peace. Pray for faith.  Pray for your heart to stop hurting. Repeat Philippians 4:6, 7 which says, “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.  And the peace of God which surpasses all comprehension shall guard your heart and mind.” And as you repeat these powerful verses that end with a specific promise from God, your faith and peace will increase.   Take God up on His offer. Turn to Him and let Him restore your hurting heart and put you once again on a “level ground,” which is the place where you’re not sinking into the depths of depression, sorrow or anxiety, so that you can get on with your life. Remember: the Comforter and Creator of the universe is very near and will send you the loving arms of your spiritual friends to comfort you as you wait.  Peace will come.
