With less than a week until Stratford High alum Matt Wieters makes his Major League Baseball All-Star Game debut, we’re checking in on what folks are saying about the catcher heading up to the big game Tuesday in Phoenix.
The Baltimore Sun’s Matt Vensel gives a pretty clear argument for why Wieters was picked over his fellow Orioles. He also notes that this is welcome redemption for Wieters, who was wrote off by some before the start of this season.
“His development behind the plate has been a revelation, and he has quickly transformed into one of baseball’s best defensive catchers. Wieters might not be hitting like Joe Mauer, but he has been no slouch at the plate.”

Vensel also suggests that there may be some Orioles up for trade, but Wieters isn’t one of them.
MASN Sports’ Matthew Taylor has some advice for the catcher, and he notes Wieters is only the fifth Orioles catcher to reach the All-Star Game. He also makes an interesting observation: each of the previous catchers made the All-Star team more than once.
