Woman to Face Charges in Attempted Prison Smuggling

Latest arrest related to contraband trafficking to the Dorchester facility.

Dorchester County police arrested a Greer woman early Wednesday with a stash of drugs, ammo and other contraband that law enforcement allege was destined for Lieber Correctional Institution.

Terri Newman, 35, of Greer, has been charged with careless operation of her vehicle, but is expected to face more charges from the South Carolina Department of Corrections (SCDC).

Early Wednesday, Dorchester County deputies were on the lookout for Newman following a tip from the SCDC that she may be heading for the prison. Newman's car was spotted at the intersection of Interstate 26 and Interstate 95.

Officers reported noticing the car weaving out of its designated lane several times. After backup arrived, Newman was pulled over and arrested.

A search of the car revealed several cell phones wrapped in plastic bags, two boxes of ammo for a .45 caliber gun, and nearly 2,000 pills of Gabapentin — epilepsy medication that is also known for its recreational use. Law enforcement also found other suspected contraband, including a box cutter, screw drivers, pens and locks, hacksaw blades, lighters and cigarettes.

Last weekend, a woman was arrested at Lieber Correctional Institution for allegedly attempted to smuggle in marijuana, according to a Post and Courier report. In November,and two abandoned vehicles on the prison's property.
