1. Car crash on Hilton Head Island blocks westbound lanes on U.S. 278. What we know (islandpacket.com) — A crash on U.S. 278 at Blue Heron Point Road has shut down all westbound lanes, severely slowing traffic for anyone trying to leave Hilton Head Island this afternoon. Deputies urge drivers to expect delays and use caution near Windmill Harbour while cameras in the area remain temporarily unavailable. Check for updates before heading off-island.
2. Waterspout caught on camera in Hilton Head (wsoctv.com) — A fair-weather waterspout formed just off Hilton Head Island's beaches Tuesday morning, briefly spinning over the ocean and tossing spray into the air. Captured on video by Shore Beach Service, the funnel was short-lived and not especially dangerous. Meteorologists note such waterspouts are fairly common along the South Carolina coast in late summer.
3. Columbia SC Week 5 HS football game schedule, predictions (thestate.com) — Hilton Head Island's football team hosts Camden this Friday in a rare rematch of their 1990 state championship clash, with both squads entering at 3–1. Local standouts like quarterback Derek Raniszewski and receiver Jeremiah Walters are putting up big numbers, giving island fans plenty to watch as Week 5 kicks off across South Carolina.
4. Beaufort County School District students named semifinalists in 2027 National Merit® Scholarship Program (wtoc.com) — A Hilton Head Island High School senior, Maggie McGrath, has been named a National Merit Scholarship semifinalist, placing her among the top one percent of U.S. high school seniors. Alongside May River's Kaden Claffy, she'll now compete for part of nearly $24 million in scholarships, highlighting the academic strength of Beaufort County schools.
