1. 11th Annual BBQ Fundraiser benefits Sharing God's Love (thelakemurraynews.net) — A popular annual barbecue fundraiser is coming back to Woodrow Street in Irmo on October 6, offering plates of pulled pork to support the local charity Sharing God's Love. Proceeds will help Irmo-area families with food, shelter, clothing and emergency financial assistance, all through a long-standing, church-supported nonprofit that serves thousands across the Midlands.
2. Scouting today: Building character, leadership and adventure for a new generation (thelakemurraynews.net) — Irmo residents involved with Rotary or youth programs can plug into several Scouting America opportunities highlighted at a recent Lake Murray-Irmo Rotary meeting. Council leader Scott Hagler outlined local Cub Scouts, Scouts BSA, Venturing and Exploring options, plus how Irmo and Chapin families can get kids involved. The Rotary Club also invited neighbors to attend its regular morning meetings at the Irmo Chapin Recreation Commission.
3. District celebrates wall-raiser ceremony at Nursery Road Elementary (lexingtonchronicle.com) — Nursery Road Elementary School-Arts Magnet in Irmo is getting enclosed classrooms, marking a major upgrade funded by Lexington-Richland School District Five's 2024 bond referendum. District leaders say the project will create quieter, more focused learning spaces and better support teachers, while preparing this nearly 50-year-old school to serve Irmo students for decades to come.
4. 'His name will not be forgotten': Midlands mourns, honors fallen Columbia police officer Chris DeLong (wistv.com) — Irmo hosted a packed memorial service at Riverland Baptist Church to honor Columbia police officer Chris DeLong, drawing law enforcement, state leaders and Midlands residents. Speakers, including the police chief and Columbia's mayor, remembered the young father's service and sacrifice, and announced his posthumous promotion. The gathering underscored Irmo's close connection to regional first responders and their families.
5. Tunnel to Towers 5K draws thousands in Columbia despite heat (wistv.com) — Irmo Fire District firefighters joined more than 2,000 participants in Columbia's Tunnel to Towers 5K, running in heavy gear to honor fallen colleagues like their own Jay Muller. Despite intense heat, they used the event to model perseverance for younger firefighters and remember 9/11 sacrifices. The run also resonated locally after a Columbia officer's recent death, reinforcing Irmo's bond with regional first responders.
